Motivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing is a method of therapy that works to engage motivation within the client to change behavior. Clients are encouraged to explore and confront their ambivalence. Clients are not forced to change, nor even expected to change, but instead are provided help to see the potential that change may offer and increase a sense of empowerment and belief in one's ability to change. The therapist's main purpose is to use the client's motivators and desire for change (intrinsic motivation) as a catalyst towards wellness. MI is proven to be an effective treatment method for substance abuse, self-harming, stealing, overeating, low academic participation, or any other behavior in which the client may be resistant to change.
